The purpose of a cover letter is to sell yourself as the perfect person for the advertised position. This should be short and to the point. When writing a cover letter, you should:

  • Address the cover letter to the job ad contact.
  • Introduce yourself.
  • Clearly reference the job (or type of job) you’re applying for.
  • Reference your skills and experience to match the skills and experience needed to do the job.
  • Include relevant academic achievements or qualifications.
  • Highlight your attributes that will be an asset to the employer’s business (such as ambition, work ethic or adaptability).
  • Encourage the reader to read your resume.
  • Thank the recruiter or employer for their consideration and invite them to contact you about the job.
